Lemonade Stand

The girls have had two unmet goals this summer:  Visiting Matt's office and running a lemonade stand.  Today, they did both.  This was the capstone event of their "community helpers" theme with Debbi.  Because Matt works in Strategy, the girls did a strategy project on how to run the best possible charity stand.

Pre-work pose.  I told Cailin to stand up straight.  For some reason, Charlotte launched into Third Position

Commuting:  On the bus

Commuting:  On foot

 Commuting:  On the escalator

 Commuting:  reading the metro map

Commuting:  Looking for our train

Commuting:  Reading the paper on the train

Commuting:  Charlotte likes to stand

We finally made it to work!  Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so they had oatmeal with honey and brown sugar.  They are watching Spanish-language television in the company cafe.

Time to get to work!  We started by brainstorming what we need for a successful lemonade stand.  This is a standard 4 Ps situation.

For "product", they came up with Lemonade, Soda, Coffee, Water, and Tea.  Since it is hot out, we crossed off hot beverages.  Charlotte observed that tea can be both hot and cold, so we clarified that we might offer iced tea.

We wanted to donate their proceeds, so we talked about places that we could give money to.  The girls answers were:  God, Teachers, People that don't go to work, Haiti, and their Sunday school teacher who is in the hospital.  After discussing, we agreed that proceeds would go to the hospital.

To decide on what beverage to serve at their stand, the girls did consumer research to see whether people prefer Lemonade or Iced Tea.  Charlotte wrote an "L" and a "T" in her notebook, then she would write a dot next to the relevant letter after interviewing each customer.  Charlotte would say "Do you like Lemonade or Iced Tea more?"  But usually Cailin got there first and would yell "Which one do you like????"  When they saw the guy in the picture below, Cailin said "Do you want coffee????"

We graphed the results, lemonade was the clear winner.

We documented our findings on the computer.  Charlotte was working very hard.

Meanwhile, Cailin had a few phone calls to make.

Charlotte sounded out and typed "lemonade" all by herself!  I am very proud of her!!

On our way out of my office, we stopped by the bank to pick up some cash (and lollipops)

Waiting for the train to take us home

It was a rough 60 minutes at the office, we earned a happy hour!

After nap, it was time to make lemonade!  Cailin is looking for the sugar

Lemonade 4 SALE!

Waiting for their first customers.  4-5pm is relatively slow by the sidewalk, but things really picked up after that

Miss Alice came by

Look at all of these satisfied customers!

Charlotte and Cailin raised more than $30, which they will donate to the hospital.  $20 of this came from one guy who stopped by on his bike and donated $20 for a glass of lemonade.  This made me feel good about humanity.

At the end of the day, I asked Cailin if she did anything interesting.  She said "we had a lemonade stand!"  I said, "you guys did a great job, you raised a lot of money for the hospital, which helps the community.  Do you know what that makes you?"  And Cailin said, "Happy!"
